Comin' Out
Project type
Sculpture
Date
March 2025
Comin’ Out is a self portrait that explores themes of transition, growth, and the body. The process of Comin’ Out is specific to each person experiencing it.
This sculpture expresses my complicated and lengthy journey to “begin” my transition. The white plinth represents my body, which after years of waiting to transition feels blank and impersonal.
The pinned cicada nymph skins on the interior represent the lengthy interior
work required to get to this point. The fully grown cicadas on the outside represent the latest steps I’ve taken in my transition. From the outside these seem like the beginning steps of my transition, but the molted cicada skins on the inside are proof of how many steps I’ve had to take to get to this point. The nymphs are visible when peering through the tunnels in the top and side of the plinth.
